TENS Units or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Simulators are awesome- if you have a bad back. I'm actually wearing my unit right now.
I tweaked my back about 6 weeks ago trying to wakeboard. I suffered a severe sprain in my lower back- tweaking the ligaments and muscles that support my spine.
Experts recommend that in most cases- you go ahead and get active- so the muscles don't deteriorate and weaken further. I joined the gym again, and started to do some light stretching and ab work. I have had to lay off of cycling- which is disappointing.
Anyway, I have had this unit for some time- and try to save it for when I need it. I have found that it enables me to get through the day at work. There are a lot of different settings, essentially, it is like getting a continuous back massage. I love it. I can not recommend this unit highly enough.
Now, if you have some serious back trouble, like bulging discs or something- I don't know how good this would work, but I suspect- it would work in a similar manner.
To close, I highly recommend a TENS unit, to anyone who suffers from occasional back strain or discomfort. Of course, ( disclaimer ) you should probably learn more from your doctor first.
